Things You Should Know Before Visiting Egypt

Documents

If you are an American, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned return date from Egypt. You must also provide proof of your intent to return or continue traveling elsewhere. Ensure that your name on the passport matches all other documents. If there are any discrepancies, please get in touch with us immediately.

Visas

To travel within Egypt, you will need a visa. You can obtain one upon arrival at Cairo Airport. Upon request, we can include visa fees and processing in your itinerary. Upon departure, you must show proof of entry via a stamp on your valid passport. Please do so to ensure you stay in the country.

Insurance

It is wise to have insurance that covers trip cancellations and medical needs while traveling. Most policies also cover baggage loss, damage, and problems caused by circumstances beyond your control. Choose an insurance policy that includes medical coverage to avoid high healthcare costs in emergencies. We can help you find the right insurance for your trip.

Appropriate Clothing

Women are advised to dress modestly while in Egypt. Skirts and dresses below the knee and short sleeves are generally acceptable, but avoiding very short or tight clothing is best. Covering your head is unnecessary, but wearing long skirts or pants is recommended. Loose-fitting clothing is more comfortable in the hot summer, and darker colors are preferable to maintain cleanliness.

Services (Electricity, Internet)

Egypt uses 220V AC, although some rural areas may use 110V AC. Plugs are either “Type C” Europlug or “Type E/F” Schuko. If you bring devices from North America, you will need an adapter. Significant cities like Cairo, Alexandria, and Luxor have many internet cafes, while smaller towns like Siwa have at least one. Hotel Wi-Fi can be expensive, so check the rates before connecting.

Money

We recommend bringing around $100 per person per day for expenses. Small bills are handy for tipping. The local currency is the Egyptian Pound. You can exchange money at banks for better rates than at airports or tourist areas. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but it is advisable to check with your bank regarding card usage in Egypt.

Vaccinations

No vaccinations are required to travel to Egypt, but caution is advised due to occurrences of avian influenza. Avoid live animal markets and ensure that poultry is well-cooked. Regular hand washing is recommended. If flu symptoms occur during or after your trip, seek medical advice.

Medicines

Prepare a list of all medications, dosages, and any medical necessities. Carry extra eyewear and medication in both checked and carry-on luggage. While non-prescription medicines are available in Egypt, prescription medications might be challenging to find. It is recommended that water purification tablets be brought in case bottled water is unavailable.

Tip in Egypt

The word ‘backsheesh’ can refer to a tip or a bribe and it is a word you are likely to hear when travelling around Egypt, as tipping is a natural part of daily life. Anyone who provides you with a service is likely to expect a tip – think waiters, drivers, representatives, Tour guide, security guards, porters and the like.

Best Time to Visit?

The climate in Egypt varies between hot and dry in many areas and cooler in the north during winter. Therefore, the best times to visit are from December to February, February to April, and October to November for more comfortable weather. Be prepared for hot, dusty conditions, especially during the winds coming from the desert in April.
